Gridiron Cutting Board
Let your table saw, router, and clamps perform the lion’s share of work here, making one of the most iconic gridiron cutting boards ever. The work consists of cutting the 5/4 cherry for the field, maple for the 10-yard lines, sidelines, and goal posts, and walnut for the end zones and sideline areas. After the glue-assembly and trimming stages, you find yourself with a cutting board measuring 1 1/8” thick x 9 15/16” wide x 16 1/4” long. To cut the thin strips used for the yard lines, sidelines, and goal posts, build the thin-strip ripping jig using the free plan available on the web site.
Once built in the order described, seal the cutting board with three coats of food-safe salad bowl finish. Then rub a coat of wax over the surfaces to further limit any moisture penetration which could lead to unwanted wood movement. Now use the gridiron cutting board for both serving and cutting anything from blocks of cheese to beef sticks, to tasty veggies.
While beautiful as it is, run up the score by having a local trophy shop laser-engrave your team’s name and logo in the sideline areas.
